Access to all and Membership model

Access to all and Membership model

Accessing means in the context of the ideal social innovations is to give everyone access to the benefits of social innovations. The main reason for the inequality in society is not having to access the benefits of the innovations and knowledge to everyone. At present, innovations and designs are driven by the idea of making profit mainly. Therefore, people are designing artifacts or systems where they can make profit and  for the people who can afford it. Innovations have no core ingredient to serve the benefits of products or services to humanity at large. The technological innovations are creating digital divides and widening the gap between haves and have-nots.   In order to give access to the benefits of social innovations or more precisely the products or services that created through the collaborative approach, we need to think of different business models that provide access to the products than ownership of the products. Every innovation or design must be accessible to everyone if it is not at the level of an individual then at the level of a group or community.  A shift has begun. Access model of business called the membership economy is accelerating. The Membership Economy is enabling all kinds of organizations to build social capital and create meaningful connections with their customers /members. Membership is timeless, important, and powerful. A membership model is a subscription model of financial arrangement with an attitude and an emotion. What makes a membership model is the attitude of the service providers and the feelings of its members, the service receivers. Idea of providing access to all should use a membership model...
Collaborative Approach in the domain of ideal social innovations?

Collaborative Approach in the domain of ideal social innovations?

The key to build and maintain a high trust society is to create a culture of coordination, cooperation, and collaboration. Collaboration is the reason for networking among groups, generating ideas and building social prosperity. People will collaborate and take part in working together in order to achieve a result they would not be able to achieve alone, and the outcomes will produce breakthrough results and wider social value as a result.  Collaboration takes place when people encounter each other and exchange something (time, care, experiences, expertise, etc) through a shared value in order to receive a benefit.  A collaborative approach is a framework that is based on trust, engages all stakeholders and creates a work environment that can tap a holistic perspective and the full intellectual potential, so they are able to produce breakthrough and sustainable results, and removes the burden of malpractice and unintended consequences of innovations, so it allows the intrinsic value of innovations to realize its full potential. The goal of the collaborative approach in the domain of the ideal social innovations is to give meaning and purposes to all participants including designers, users, clients, customers and other stakeholders. Ideal social innovations occur when people, knowledge, expertise, and material assets come into contact in a new way that is able to create new opportunities and meaning. So the likelihood of this happening depends largely on the people who share common values and are willing to design as a service for all.  Here are several other ways to think about the Collaborative Approach: A total shift. The collaborative approach is a total shift in the way we work...
The ownership-Access pendulum is swinging away from owning to accessing

The ownership-Access pendulum is swinging away from owning to accessing

In the past, much of our economy has operated on the principles of ownership. Companies sell things, and consumers buy them and own them. The idea of ownership is simple—if it’s mine, it’s mine. I can alter, destroy, sell, or save my stuff, and I can use it for as long as I’d like.  The latest technological advancement especially artificial intelligence is transforming static products into digital and connected products. The concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) is getting popular and becoming essential for all sizes of industries that design material products. When products are becoming smart and connected, then the inner nature of the product behaves more like a software than hardware. Software demands continuous improvement and upgrade, which is the essential nature of any services. So, products becoming services, service prefers to access over ownership. There are several other technological trends that are emerging that prefer access over ownership.  Most recently we observed, “Uber, the world’s largest taxi company, owns no vehicles. Facebook, the world’s most popular media owner, creates no content. Alibaba, the most valuable retailer, has no inventory. Airbnb, the world’s largest accommodation provider, owns no real estate. Something interesting is happening.” Indeed, digital media exhibits a similar absence. Netflix, the world’s largest video hub, allows us to watch a movie without owning it. Spotify, the largest music streaming company, lets us listen to whatever music we want without owning any of it. Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited enables us to read any book in its more than million volume library without owning books. Every year we own less of what we use. Possession is not...
A holistic view of design

A holistic view of design

We view nature and human activity as interrelated and interrelating. As designers, we believe that we need to view the world from the perspective of the whole. What do we mean when we say that a design constitutes a whole? What does it mean to design holistically? The term whole and derivative forms like holism and holistic, are used in diverse ways.  The term whole is often taken to mean the entirety of existence, an all-inclusive perspective.  Some of the most common concepts share the trait of ‘claimed comprehensiveness’ The term whole is often used to imply an inclusive understanding of the relationship of everything. This definition arises from the scientific approach to the concept, where ‘wholes’ are defined as the study of comprehensive systems. The underlying assumption is that you need to know everything about a phenomenon in order to understand it. This comprehensiveness requires that everything with a relationship to the phenomenon of interest is included in its analysis.  Luckily, holism can be viewed from a variety of other angles. One such perspective defines the whole as a comprehensive understanding of the world in metaphysical terms. The term whole is also understood, utilizing the spiritual concept of oneness, that all things are merely glimpsed reflections of a unitary reality. A permutation of this is the understanding that all things are connected or interconnected systemically. Whole can also mean the complete or comprehensive collection of things, whether abstract or concrete; visible or invisible; physical or metaphysical. In this case, the belief is that there is a whole from which everything emerges. A belief is the holistic character of reality,...
